My name is Galu (pronounced ngaa-luu) Letiu. I am a Licensed Building Practitioner with over 20 years of experience in the industry, and the founder of Fair & Square Building Services Limited.

We are an innovative, family-run building company based in Wellington and specialising in new residential and home renovations.

My partner in both life and business, Catherine, and I have four children and a more recent addition, our first grandchild. Each of them are growing at their different stages of life, attending college, building careers and navigating new parenthood. As they gain their independence, we are finding and enjoying more time to dedicate to growing this business together.

Having worked in a much larger construction business for 15 years, I felt drawn to forming a smaller company with the aim of delivering a personal approach to, not only our clients, but also our staff. Being a dedicated 1st XV Rugby coach at a local college for a few years, I was inspired to implement a more hands-on approach through “coaching” our staff at their respective skill-levels with the ultimate goal of helping them become great builders.

We put the time and thought into fostering good work relationships, supporting physical and mental health and starting all our workers on the at-present Living Wage – the positive results of this are reflected in our successful projects and satisfied clients.

For many years, we have worked closely with Gateway and Mana in Mahi programmes at helping younger workers get into practical work that they can build into a career as they learn. Seeing people in our team reach their qualifications as builders is rewarding and inspiring, but also contributes to the larger picture, which shows an ever-growing demand for construction workers in Aotearoa.

The role of building has become increasingly important in recent years, and more rapidly so during the time of COVID-19 and the national housing crisis.
